ความทรงจำมากมายที่เรามีต่อโอมานวนเวียนกับเรื่องกลิ่น ตอนนั้นเป็นหน้ากุหลาบและทับทิมที่โอมาน เมื่อเราปีนขึ้นและลงเทือกเขา Jebel Akhdar กลิ่นกุหลาบไม่ได้แค่ลอยอ้อยอิ่งในสวนของบ้านแต่ละหลัง แต่ยังอยู่กระทั่งในตัวหมู่บ้าน อากาศอบอวลด้วยกลิ่นกุหลาบหอมจางๆ

โอมานและตะวันออกกลางเป็นที่รู้จักเรื่องความมั่งคั่ง อย่างไรก็ดี สิ่งที่โดดเด่นของโอมานคือกลิ่นที่เติมเต็มความว่างเปล่า ความเรียบง่ายของชีวิตประจำวันในเมืองประวัติศาสตร์อย่าง Nizwa และอากาศอวลกลิ่นกำยานของบรรดามัสยิดในเมือง Muscat กลิ่นเหล่านี้แสดงความงามของวัฒนธรรมโอมานที่เชื่อมต่อนักท่องเที่ยวกับมัสยิดโอ่อ่า และทิวทัศน์ธรรมชาติสวยงาม ด้วยวิธีการที่ชวนดื่มด่ำและครอบคลุมทุกสิ่ง  

So much of what I remember of Oman revolves around fragrances. It was rose and pomegranate season in Oman, and as I trekked up and down the slopes of Jebel Akhdar, the smell of roses lingered not only in the gardens of the individual homes but also within villages themselves. The air was soaked in a subtle rose fragrance.

Oman, and the Middle East itself, can be known for its opulence; however, what was striking about Oman were the fragrances that filled the void, the simplicity of everyday life that existed within the historic town of Nizwa and the Frankincense-infused air of mosques of Muscat. Fragrances represent an in-between sense of beauty in Omani culture that connects travelers to the opulent mosques and beautiful natural landscapes in such a way that is both immersive and all-encompassing.
